Candidate Activities
If you are a candidate for membership in Michigan Epsilon, you have already
distinguished yourself through high scholastic achievements. But distinguished
scholarship is only the beginning. Those who are elected to membership
in Tau Beta Pi must also possess exemplary character. In order to determine
whether candidates possess exemplary character, we need to get to know
them better, and they need to get to know us and our chapter. To that
end, the following is a list of the activities we ask our candidates to
participate in:
Signatures
The candidate booklet contains several pages of signatures. Obtain
the signatures of at least 50% each of the listed faculty and members.
In addition, the signatures of 50% of your fellow candidates should
be recorded on one of the blank signature pages. The second blank page
can be used to record the signatures of alumni, graduate students, and
eminent engineers who are Tau Beta Pi members for extra credit.
Tau Beta Pi Questions
Answer some basic questions about Tau Beta Pi including its history.
Answers to the questions can be found in the Information Booklet and
the Constitution and Bylaws booklets as well as the world wide web.
Candidate Resume
The candidate booklet has a candidate resume page which provides some
basic information about yourself. Make sure to answer the three questions
on the bottom of candidate resume. Separate sheets of paper may be used
to answer the questions.
Formal Resume
A formal resume is required of each candidate prior to their interview.
Interview
Attend an informal interview with two members so they can get to know
you better.
Activities
Candidates for membership must participate in a minimum of four hours
of activities. This includes service and social activities. Initiates
may choose to tutor to fulfill this requirement. At least one hour of
activity must be in one of the following: Engineering Futures; Bent
Polishing Workshop; Engineering Open House; Bent Polishing; or Meet
the College Luncheon.
Personal Bent
Each candidate must submit a polished small bent. Take pride in your
Bent! The bent is the symbol of Tau Beta Pi and is important to all
members of Tau Beta Pi.
Faith of the Engineer
All candidates are asked to read the "Faith of the Engineer"
plaque on the first floor of the Engineering Building in the laboratory
wing.
Constitution and Bylaws
Initiates are required by the Association to read the Constitution
and Bylaws of Tau Beta Pi. It is also wise to read the Michigan Epsilon
Bylaws to get a feel for our chapter's active membership requirements.
Seem like a lot? Our membership requirements were established using the
Eligibility Code of Tau Beta Pi . However, we realize that some of our
candidates may be co-ops are not on campus very often, or have extenuating
circumstances. The chapter has many activities that you can do on your
own time to fulfill your time requirements including:
- Charity Raffle
- Canned Food Drive
- Short Personal Bio for the Local Bent
- Tutoring
- Paperweight Bents
However, if the requirements for membership would be difficult for you
to complete, you are encouraged to contact Membership Vice President,
Johnny Lampley, so your situation can be given due attention. If you still
have questions, feel free to contact Johnny Lampley for more information
or clarification of any of requirements.
